My project SoundGroove

Recently i removed my first version of SoundGroove from the hub because there where some bugs in a previous version of MNode that where preventing me to perform the UI designs i would prefer. At some point a bottleneck of 30-40% cpu usages and the intention to have even more sequencing on the audio At this moment for me its around 9% so that’s an improvement overall.

I am not releasing in to the hub right away, i am not up to it to do an update every time if have fix or changed something for a little bit. Meanwhile i will post and update in the forum.

My final goal is all about sequencing audio signals. And if MNodes get’s more and more of options i will add them if they are use full.

What to expect, wel my imagination is not defined at this moment so it could get crazy, limits are what MNodes allows me but the following thoughts are:

  • Sequencing audio
  • Sampling that audio
  • Sequencing the recorded audio
  • Sample players.
    ---- multiple sequencing for above.
  • Automation

If in the end Mario introducing more visuals nodes, then expect that.

But for now, this is some type of test & experience release. Hoping for feedback, the bad and the ugly. Your ideas, what is on your mind if you use this and if it doesn’t fit what you expected, what should i do or don’t.

And if you only think, not my thing but gratefully look up the nodes and use parts of it to explore them and use them yourself, be my guest. In the end i also you might learn a few things or even tell me that i made a mistake.

Have fun!.

Download will be flagged as “Solution”:

i think your policy of having patches on the forum first to then later upload to hub is a good one i will adopt with my w.i.p. stuff but could you tell me how you upload here i cant find it but he i am dyslectic i might be staring at it lol

your fx i happy give a go during the hot hours tomorrow, do have any tips? what sort of material would work best on it.

No worries, my wife has dyslexia too and even acquired brain injury at birth, i have a bit of autism and my son has adhd so in my family we all learned how to deal with each other

Well uploading is easy:

While writing a message, just drag that file into this and screen’s you just copy & paste here. There is no need to search for a upload function in this message writer.

And for a source of a sound, well of course anything will work but because it’s sequencing what you loop in your daw or otherwhise a rhythmic sound like drums will give you the benefit of an expected pattern to work with.

But just experiment and if you think something does not work out, just let me know.

Have fun tommorrow!

You’re working on an incredible project. It looks really promising.

Indeed, I don’t even want to know how much nodes i connected.

And there will be much more, of course until i hit some type of limitation. Might be if i wired 2000 nodes that MNodes say “its enough, get a life and no more wires for you”.

In the end Mario, my compliments are for you. As i even could pick up Juce and start programming myself. I wont have the time to design something like MNodes. That a lot of planning and try-outs to test what works or not. lots of considerations you had to make. and then the endless if & why’s for windows and macs systems.

Anyhow if i hit a limit, i will inform you.. might request more wires

Have a nice day.

first impression: what does it say cant read it is so small the text on my end

i struggled to get something out of it that compares to the audio level i put in at first. what i get is nice tho but was trying to find a knob for paralel or something so i could balance the old with the new on top of what you have here with mix knobs coz if i paralel what i had in fl studio it sounded pretty cool must say i had to turn down the chorus mainly to get most volume back

ideas: for the delay it makes a lot of sence doing it in steps but perhaps there is room for integration of a multi envelope in some regard with some effects coz that would also enable ramps and stuff like having automation lanes on top of it if that makes sence

anyway it looks promosing

i cant help to wonder what ya gonna do when you by accident dragged a wire of lol

Thanks for your feedback,

Okay, Resolution/size and colour calibration of a monitor can indeed have that impact on any design. Just wondering if you where able to resize it to the max of your monitor and if it’s then still even unreadable.

And are all the text hardly readable or is it just the top select menu bar where the grey background and a slightly white texts in it , is the first menu bar option (Audio input) readable?

Of course a vst plugin should not stretch out to a full monitor size to be able to be readable. I will work on that. i just have to figure out a base line between all situations.

I was already working on to mix the original sound into it so that you can also hear / mix in the original sound without any effects but just straight from the track to the end. So perhaps that could give a better conclusion what is happening with the audio levels.

I still have to work out how i do a real dB metering to gives feedback about the actual loudness. I have one at the audio input section but thats just a visual and not a real measurement yet.

And i can give it a try with multi envelopes, got to experiment with that and see how that works out. At this moment i have no insight how or what to expect from it in a sequencing way. For me everything goes until i reach the end of the limits in performance. Conidering the CPU usage of course. would be nasty if only my plugin eats all the cpu processing.

Well and for the wires part, haha.. i got backups. but i manage.. a lot of it is in my head, i have a more a visual way of remembering things where in the other hand i never can remember lyrics from a song for example. Even if would quit now and pick this up a year later, i still will remember where things at.

It the meanwhile i already added sequencing the panning:

By the way, if you open this image to see its actual size, are you then be able to read the texts?

Anyhow, again. thanks for your feedback.. i do realy hope that i can contribute something use full to MNode hub content.

you already contribute  biggest part of a tool like this is its community

yeah i think it would make it easyer to balance the sound having a paralel stream

yes i can read that but just, on testing your plugin i had it full screen and could barely read most and the buttons on top not at all they lack contrast but see i am an edge case using windows in 150% to get my older plugins big enough

Okay,

Well then my first attempt will be to scale things up so when it scales down to a lesser size it still could be readable. Ah you have that same issue like me, only a different reason. i scale up to 125% and have the monitor closer to me. Since 5 years i wear glasses with multi focus and that was a bad life changer

Ok. got some work to do!

i landed on text and label size of 15 for my time synched filter not sure if initial scaling is default or if it is as it was saved now we have scaling tho. but you could check how that looks on your end

Ok, Thanks for your reference. I already started to test things, i have it on 16 now. and looking into it if i can make it all work, especially how much space i got left to work with. before i had i on 12 or sometimes even less then that, i try to work around the 15 value.

ya know what, this should be possible with a knob or so linked to text size that would make things easyer

I redesigned the first page (audio) and the top menu. I hope this is more readable.

top is great rest i would not mind a 0.5 increese however i can read it already tho i think that if you end up having some space left on bottom i can scale that a tiny bit bigger myself

Okay, Ah got some idea’s. might work out. i will try to implement a text-size option so you can scale them all with a single function. In the end it would be not so fun if you have to edit the project every time when i release a new version.

yeah just connect all to 1 knob going to 1 appearance changer does not have to be a user button just for you to easy edit it if needed

New version:

  • Bigger knobs
  • Some design changes for Master / Slave
  • Slight adjustment in design how a knob is disabled or not usable.
  • No more On/Off text but only a power symbol with a red/green status switch.

[audio section]

  • Input level gain
  • Dry signal mix in.
  • Output monitoring

[Settings menu added]
the option to size the text to adjust to your liking.

  • sound levels are much better now however i could not really test it as i would like
  • see periodicly the gui has become quite sluggish to the point that clicking on on off or rnd often doesnt do anything or it does a second or 2 later same for turning knobs. it pretty much freezes my daw in time untill i disable mnodes fx
  • rnd buttons seam uneffected from font size
  • would be helpfull if you could see some text changing size on settings tab perhaps the button itself

i like what you did with the delayed signal and then replace text

edit

  • some button with long text like feedack and the one next to it dont allow a font size i would prefer

Thanks for the feedback,

Yeah i think that this project is not working out for you. I had four of them running without major issue’s. only resizing of the windows where noticeable a bit slower and a faster division made the sequencer giving a reverse loop. So that already mean that de graphics engine could not perform in it’s refresh rate.

And the problem with GUI design is that you need options/templates to be able to address different environments. And even now i cant save a preset, i can not store data to save into or read from. i can not unload a module to save up memory and cpu usage.

To make this project i have to wait wat mario brings with MNode and where it stops, at the end i know he can’t do more then the juce framework and his dsp routines are doing. then there it always will start about the users computer performance.

We got to see what the future brings, this project i made is for my personal idea and it works for me as is. Not saying that i dont care about others, i love to share my creations but this just concludes that i have to make smaller projects for the MNode users.

So at this moment i am thinking just to create single sequencers for a specific effect. Just multiple mnode projects with the same design and approach but no FX chain anymore, just one specific detail for sound design.

I will still releasing updates to this project, but i gonna slow down on it and concentrate on those smaller versions of fx sequencing.. i learned a lot, lots of reusable components. we will figure things out

yeah its hard to say how mnodes ends up and to no fault of mario we are in early access ofc but this sort of project is a good thing to find current boundaries and generate feedback from to mario ultimately that is the focus untill 1.0
