My first attempt to building a 8 voice (now 3 OSC) synth

cpu useage was not that bad using 3 osc for me and i did not “fix” it

but i must say its hard to figure out what is doing what on my end because i have to make it smaller to fit screen making text much smaller

i wondered if the top 2 displays are working because i could not get it to display something like i could on osc 3 and thats possibly because i cant read it

Good to hear

No the top two you are showing are power width modulators, they only are able to work if that indicator’s are green. so if you select Pulse or Subtractive as your oscillator then you can use them.

If i remember well you upscale your windows to 150%? Under normal condition’s it should work visually fine.

true but other vst i have have no problem with that tho

i try again in the morning

I made the change to 8 voices and performance improved a lot. Great synth. Now if only the synth itself had presets

Problem i have the same situation, i got no problems with my plugins also. all have the same scale so i wouldn’t know where to start. I can’t make things that much bigger.. i will give it a try to get some common ground to share the visuals in the future. most font size’s are 18 like we where talking abound the sequencer project at that time.

Good to hear.

Ah i must say, i am using that poly module but it is not working out that well. i noticed something that i didn’t expected. holding 3 notes a a chord, and playing short other notes will make the chord stop playing. like if the ADSR is getting canceled.

Don’t know what’s that about, i don’t even know how to prevent that. do i made a mistake or is it a bug.. i am clueless

But i was actually working out a preset system at this moment. but that’s me again, i dont want a single state system. i want to categorize them also. another experiment.. how to make that work as i would expect for other experiments. i am not going for a single column with 100 presets.. those old skool plugins that have that are a nightmare to browse trough.

i understand that me saying that is kinda anoying

perhaps there is some gain to be had with simple contrast

this site gives ratings for different text sizes on different gui sizes

Oh no, your good on that. i actual don’t get annoyed that easily. i just accept that you can’t please all systems. And for contrast checkers, that’s like going down the rabbit hole.

That is like setting al things based on a contrast ratio while every single user has a non color calibrated monitor with it’s own contrast/sharpness/brightness settings.

It never ends

The best thing for me to do is just wait how much feedback i get in total and see how everyone is feeling about the design.

yeah and ultimately i am the fringe one here and i can accept that to

i am very curious when you figure that preset system out tho haha been cracking my brain on that you pretty much have to replace the whole save system for each catagory then but how to switch the rest not saving then

No worrie’s. if i can do something about it.. i will

Ah the preset system.. don’t get me started.. i am figuring it out right now

At least the states are also XML files so.. whatever happens.. i got room to work with. if i need a XML generator i make a web based (php) version of it. i hope i don’t have to stretch that far

Hey, at least on my side I can read everything clearly. My monitor scaling is set to 100%.

Maybe the main thing I’m missing here (apart from being able to save states)is a filter per oscillator, although I understand it’s not finished yet and you may already have that planned.

Adding tooltips would also be great, so users can clearly understand what each parameter does. There’s actually an issue on my side here: filmstrips currently don’t show tooltips. I’ll add that in the next version.

And one last small suggestion: maybe when an oscillator is disabled, you could grey it out slightly or change its look a little. That would make it much clearer which oscillators are active and which aren’t.

But overall, excellent work!

if save states had a folder option you could separate them on saving

Thanks for letting me know.

example

Just imagine this tooltip was set on the widget text “Smooth” and it does this. I don’t feel comfortable yet to use it right now.

Yeah i have a lot of planned, from filters/eq, effects and so much more. Also the states for a small amount of presets. Just figuring out how i implement the states. how to manage things. as it seems i can only run one state section, was figuring out if could make different type of sections. but i just spend 15 minutes yesterday on it , so don’t see this as a question or whatever the limits are.. i figure it out

Roger that

heart

this is the kind of thing where having a hover over help display would shine imo

never mind my really ugly gui its just a collection of controls i am collecting for my control designer for now but ive been testing that idea and i like it coz i can turn it on or off

test

Danny,

I know you’re getting a lot of help from us users (perhaps too much ) for new ideas for your synth but as long as you’re building a running list of features that you may or may not implement, a couple of suggestions are:

  • Filter modulation once filters on the OSCs are added
  • Filter ADSRs as well
  • A sequencer within the synth to allow for more creative patches
  • An arpeggiator within the synth maybe leveraging the sequencer.

I know those last two are really big items but here is my thinking…

With Native Instruments’ future uncertain and Reaktor support shrinking, MNodes has a real chance to become the “new Reaktor”. At least this is what I would love to see. I think to help in this direction it would seem to me that potential buyers would expect to see solid examples of what MNodes can do. There are many great examples on the Hub already. But I think your synth is one of the small number of projects on the Hub that is really moving in a good direction that could serve as a basis for such a flagship example if developed further. And you are one of the most knowledgeable MNodes users I have seen on the forum (along with Mario and OctaFuzZ). So if interested, it could be a cool idea to parlay your project into a greater MNodes example.

I completely realize that its easy for me to sit here and suggest someone else do more work. I’m honestly not trying to do that. I’m just pointing out that given the advanced state of your synth, it could become a key MNodes marketing example as it evolves at a time MNodes stands a chance of becoming a new “standard” tool for producers.

Hi Jeff,

No problem, i love to have feedback and suggestions. at the end it depends which problems i run into. at first sight i want to have it running using not to much CPU or at least make it possible to disable whatever might be to much for any usage for certain systems.

In general is something to heavy you could have at least the option to bounce it to an audio track or while it doesn’t sit well enough to run with multiple plugins. But i am trying to have it perform it as best i can achieve.

Filter and a EQ where on my list. Now i don’t gonna go to crazy there so it will be on the end of a single oscillator section, not separate on each voice(note). Normally i would try it out because i love to experiment but based on what i know i have to apply that with some caution so every oscillator get’s its own filer/eq and i will try to figure out something workable/usable for the filter to modulate.

Just got to figure out how to assign, or route a modulation from within the interface to make it easy to use. i will figure something out.

This one i got to figure out, didn’t crossed my mind but it’s a valid creative tool to do. so thanks for that suggestion.

I had this also on my mind. Now what i have in mind most likely exceeds any possibility but i am gonna try to sequence notes and all kind of parameters. i don’t know how yet, some type of step sequence recorder where you can also record any parameter. But that’s gonna be a huge project on it self. But we take it from the basics and see what i can do.

I will try that also

Yes, might take some time.. Ah the first step is getting the oscillators do what i wish they would do and then the filters/eq/effects. also a preset (state) part. might not be what i would like it be since i think you can’t have multiple states to make groups of category’s so it will be a single drop down list at this moment.

But while we are progressing you never know what MNode 2.0 is able to do  so time will tell while we are progressing in each update.

I think that MNode could achieve that.

I am at a point that i stop counting the hours.. haha. i think i am 500 hours in. now its not completly MNode. sometimes i am using tools like Blender to design the knobs or other visuals. or i am just redesigning things. a lot of nodes i didn’t touched yet.

No worries, just go a head with ideas on your mind. if it’s to crazy, i even will try it out.. if it doesn’t work out, or i don’t have the time for it then i also would respectfully decline the suggestion

Wouldn’t that be great.. :innocent:

Thanks for your thoughts, the suggestions. all of it

its not doing worse than me trying serum 2 :stuck_out_tongue: and i did not apply your fix so i think the future has some promises for mnodes mario is improving in a rate we probably need a new numbering system in about 2 months :stuck_out_tongue:

I made some adjustments, now i cant upload the project here now but for a visual reference i changed this:

To this now (still working on it but more to come tomorrow)

Hope it helps out a bit.. fighting the pixel space now

This is the better reference, screenshots dont help out on its own scaling:

But for now this MNoder is gonna

(file removed, new update posted)

  • The “state” changer is not working perfectly, so it will not switch to some panels. that makes it a bit awkward to have it in here right now. The state does change all values and nothing will go wrong on the sound design but my filmstrip buttons don’t get trigger into the actual state of there positions.

So you might see things like OSC A is set to SIN but it will show the last chosen panel when you where playing around of that oscillator.

  • Oscillator sections that are turned off have a visual indication that there are not on.

  • I changed the knob and text label sizes to be a bit bigger, at least within the space i have left without making it to crowded. Hope it works out for some other resolution settings if they differ from standard setups.

  • All oscillators have an FX section but limited to a reverb only for the time being.

  • No tooltip solution, i have a discomfort with the current method. it hovers around to much as a ghost hunting my mouse for a long time. will figure something else out but since i am still working on design and redesign, new features and/or changes to them it feels a bit of waste of time for doing that right now.

Oh and there are some presets i made but these where just for testing.

And i don’t know how it works out if you make presets, you might need to backup the mnstates file in your local folder and how compatible it will stay when i make updates after them. i am not aware yet how this works out with MNode.

he danny is the one on the hub always updated?
